December 28th, 2010

On December 21st, 2010, (the early morning hours of the winter solstice), Northern America was privileged to witness a full lunar eclipse, that of which hasn't taken place on the winter solstice since December 21st, 1638. Another lunar eclipse on the winter solstice will not happen again 'til the year 2094. Yours truly was there to photograph the event. In the spring of 2010, I became a volunteer at a local observatory in NJ. My trainer is a NASA ambassador who has taught me to operate a $150,000.00 telescope. In addition the staff hired me to take photographs of celestial objects in the sky. That will include planets, nebulas, stars and the such. Photographing the lunar eclipse of 2010 was my first assignment for the observatory. My photos premiered on a local cable news program and will be used in the future for the observatories students and classes on space exploration.

It was a slow, hot summer. As a result I closed down the studio from mid June ‘til late September.
One of the coolest things I was given this summer, by a friend of mine, was this real life, (dead) human skeleton. When I got it, I could see it was very brittle and delicate. And needed some restoring. So, I sealed the whole thing, like I do with the Apocalyptic Sculptures. Now, He’s completely protected on the outside and no longer needs to worry about crazy little kids, doing crude and obscene things to him. He’s got a nice new home here in my studio with all the other dead things.
Welcome “Spock” the skeleton!

This painting was a wedding gift for 2 friends of mine: Sarabeth & Charles Burns. Although the photgraph of the painting is not that great, it still gives you a general idea of the subjects and images within. The red paint kept making it difficult to get a decent picture of the painting. This untitled piece was made using enamel paint on an intentionally broken piece of flat, press board wood. It was completed in 2006, by yours truly. In the bottom, left hand corner, a photograph depicts an image of the two people for whom the painting was created for. These photos depict me at work on this very large graphite pencil drawing that I've been working on for quite some time now. In one of the shots, you will notice my cockatoo Captain in the shot with me. He was giving me advice on how to finish the drawing. I tried to get him to smile for the camera, but he's so serious sometimes.

The other painting below is one of the many watercolor paintings I've been doing in an approach to practicing my hand at working in the medium of watercolor paints. Since watercolor was never a style/paint that I worked with in my past, I'm taking the opportunity to paint as many pieces as I can using them to enhance my creations with that type of paint. As you can see, this image is of a tropical fish that I chose to use as a subject. Taking into consideration that this painting is still not yet completed, I nevertheless feel that it is one of the better pieces I've done using watercolor so far.

Finally, the last of the photos are of an Apocalyptic assemblage sculpture that I completed specifically for the Halloween art show, (see LATEST FEATURES link for photos). This piece contains: 2 pig skulls, 4 pig jaws, 1 coyote skull, 1 deer skull cap antler stubs, 1 Madagascar flying lizard & 1 Madagascar chameleon, 2 pheasant claws, crow feathers, sheep jaw, coyote jaws, 3 doll heads, 2 full grown deer ribs, 2 horseshoe crab shells and lots of foliage. This piece is entitled: "Of Ritual Decor" and will be going to Freddy, who is the owner of Dingbats club & Dingo's Den in Clifton, NJ. (He is also the man who provided me with the pig skulls and pig jaw bones to complete the piece).
Much THANX to Flo, Keeley, John and Todd who provided me with the horseshoe crab shells, the pheasant claws, the coyote skull and the lizards.

This photo is of the latest APOCALYPTIC sculpture I'm currently working on. Its called "The Instrument Of Death" and includes the following items: 9 human rib bones, 3 vertebra from a deer, the wings of a Blue Jay, the shoulder blade/skull/jaw bones of a coyote, over 150 needles from a porcupine and much more all pieced together within genuine violin case.

Here is a look at the latest drawing with graphite sticks that I'm currently working on. It's going to be an enormous work of art when it's finally completed. It measures roughly 40"x50" and is by far the largest drawing I've ever worked on. - MCMZone 6/1/09

The two drawings above are just a few of the most recent pieces that I've been working on. These two are done in pencil and are simply sketches. I'll be adding pictures of the very, very, very large drawing that I'm working on and incorporating the ideas from the drawings above together into one gigantic piece. It will be several weeks, maybe even months before this large epic drawing is finished. Stay tuned.

It’s been nearly six months since the launch of the Horrible Artwork web site and tons of hours spent preparing, touching up, designing and arranging all the works of art you see within. When the site first launched, about 20 pieces went up to start things off. Since then, the total count of pieces has reached over 150. And there's still more to come.

I wanted to show everyone that any piece within the site can be custom ordered and printed on almost any type of backing desired. For an example, I included these two photographs of custom orders that were printed on canvas (instead of paper) and framed. All this work that can be done through Horrible Artwork, so keep that in mind if you’re looking for something special. Just ask.

For those of you that have tapped into Horrible Artwork’s site, tantalized by the sheer name alone, seeking art that falls into the horrible/hideous category, I sincerely hope you are not disappointed by the overall diversity of work on the site. By now, I hope you’ve realized that the word “horrible” is not a description of my art. The combination of skulls, monsters and ghouls mixed in alongside my other work of animals, scenery, or other subjects not fitting the “horrible” criteria, is simply my attempt to prove that not everything I create is pigeon holed into one specific type or style. My abilities to do diverse work is what it's all about. I hope that all of you interested in my art can view my work openly and appreciate the efforts of my creations.

There are still a lot more pieces to come, which will show more of my current work and style. In fact, you can see in the photograph above, the 18 original pieces I’m currently working on called Apocalyptic Sculptures. These hand crafted boxes contain objects that reflect life and death and will be sold as original works of art when they are completed. These pieces should be ready in about a month or so. Also, the painting “My Summer Vacation” (located on the Features page of this site), will be ready for purchase as a strict limited edition print. This large painting which includes, human & animal bones around the frame work of the original, created by yours truly, will be limited to 25 prints ONLY! Keep checking in for its completion if you’re interested.

You may have noticed a lot of dates on my pieces within the site, which indicates some of the work is not so recent. This is because a lot of pieces from the early years of making art were the first wave of scans and photos I prepped for the site, from early on in that era. In weeks to come, more of my current work will make it to the site for everyone to view, but as usual, it takes time. So please be patient and enjoy the new/old art as it appears, week by week, until the site reaches a finishing point.

Finally, I'm pleased to say that preparations are being made for the site’s first guest artist. Paul Fragoso, a.k.a. Phil N. DeBlankz (creator of The Empire Hideous band logo and many other amazing pieces), will have several works of art featured on the site as limited edition prints available for purchase.

ThanX so much for everyone’s support.

Here are some pictures recently discovered of my artistic childhood days. (I said artistic, NOT autistic!) I just had to share these drawings with everyone, because I think they’re so genuine overall. Viewing something like this from your past and comparing it to what you do today is always quite fascinating and in this case, quite amusing. These drawings are from my very first days in Kindergarten, between the years of 1970 and ’71. Yeah, that’s right, I’m old! But I’m cool and that’s all that really matters.
It was obvious by the likes of these drawings that I didn’t go forward in the direction of mechanical drafting, or designing buildings for a living. Although maybe I wouldn’t be as poor as I am right now if I did…. Hmmmm…. Too late now. Instead I leaned more towards the creation of monsters and all that is creepy. It was in my blood from the sweet young age of 5. Destin to conjure up dark images, fantastic places and things not of this world. And here we are today, 36 years later… I guess I haven’t changed a bit. Except back then, mom and dad were paying for everything.
Enjoy.
